Monte Oton Garnacha 2013 is made by Bodegas Borsao and has a very typical alcohol on the medium level of 13.5%. This wine is coming from Campo de Borja, which enjoys some northern slopes in the northeast Spain. The terrain is actually of a very important note here, as together with the cooling Cierzo wind it is all aids to the development of a different Garnacha.
Let’s explore how it is different. The wine is medium bodied, with a good content of ripe red fruit and spices.
2013 harvest was very generous for Spain and that is the reason of why we see such an abundance of cheap wine from Spain on our shelves now.
This Spanish wine is not going to blow your mind, but the quality of winemaking is obvious – they have carefully selected the grapes which are ripe, but have been growing in cooler conditions.
I must admit I do like when winemakers put that on the label rather than just ‘smooth red with spicy notes that will match mature cheese’. I have my own palate and will decide what to have it with, yet there are so many vineyards, so a little bit of explanation about theirs is definitely helping to imagine what to expect from the wine.
The expectations were not unmet – it is a youthful and spicy Spanish wine, clearly showing good red fruit and definitely has this kick of lightness and acidity.
