Sounds fun and exciting, yet the reality is different. You should not worry though.
Nutritional sciences recommend a 25 – 35 y.o. men to consume up to 3l of water per day, and up to 2.7l for women. I might be very wrong here, but unless you dramatically changed your lifestyle and added this needed water content to it, you may be just missing out on at least half of the recommended dosage.
For myself, it has been more than 10 years now since I have tried to incorporate more water in my daily routine. I have actually followed Ellington Darden ‘A Flat Stomach ASAP’ programme (A Flat Stomach ASAP: The Look You Want in Just Six Weeks), where one of the key elements is to consume at least 4 litres of cold water per day. I must say, 4 litres can be a bit much, especially when you need to make yourself available for quite a few frequent trips to the loo.
Yet I have found that 3 litres can help you a lot with food cravings, as after a glass (or two) of water, you do not want to eat as much, you simply feel fuller already. You should spread this quantity over the whole day, of course trying to avoid drinking a big chunk of it before going to bed.
One thing to mention here: it is all about plain still water, not sparkling, not sweetened etc.
Also, I have found useful to add a juice of half (or quarter, if half is way too acidic for you) a lemon in the morning, to kick start your metabolism for a day.
Lastly, a note about wine: generally speaking, alcohol dehydrates you, so my rule of thumb is to drink two glasses of water when I am drinking one large glass of red. So do not forget your jug of water when you are to serve dinner.
