I invite you to virtually visit yet another organic winery in Priorat. This time I have chosen Mas Blanc, one of the Pinord’s vineyards in Spain.
The history for this company is going back over 150 years and it all started in Penedes, just outside of Barcelona.
First wave of fame came when the company started selling their light wines slightly spritzed – you can notice these small bubbles in young wines. Over years the company was building up their reputation. They have added Reserva and Gran Reserva aged wines, still wines, monovarietal wines, cavas and their own privately owned wineries in Priorat and Ribera del Duero to the original Pearl wines made in the 1940s. To these, they have also added their own labels with their own vineyards within the wine appellations of La Rioja, Rías Baixas, Terra Alta, Rueda and Navarra.
The name is derived from Pine of the North, and the company started to convert their vineyards to organic farming one by one a long time ago. Priorat one was converted just over a decade ago, Pinord has been true to organic principles and philosophy and, in fact, at Mas Blanc in Priorat, they have gone one step further in this direction by adopting biodynamic organic farming practices. In this way, Pinord has been the first winery in the whole of Spain to have its wine issued with an international certificate of biodynamic farming by Demeter.
To this day, there are now 15 organic Pinord wines available and for Joan Josep Tetas it “is a commitment which we will be building on over time”.
They are offering a range of wines, one that I have already spotted in the UK is Balcons 2006 organic Priorat wine – I haven’t yet tried it, but please do send me your notes if you already did!
As for the visits, they are offering a range of activities: you can opt-in for a visit to the winery –
Monday to Friday from 10 to 14 h. and 16 to 19 h. Saturday and Sunday mornings only 10 to 14.00 h. Price: 7 €
Also, every 1st Saturday of the month they are offering a course consisting of an introduction to wine tasting and cellar visits. It begins at 11 am and lasts for 2 hours. Price: 15 €
Finally, something not that obvious is their ‘activity in the vineyards’. I wonder what is that, but if you are there on any 3rd Saturday of the month you can find out! You can visit the winery and participate in those ‘activities in the vineyards’ for 10 euro and it will also last for 2 hours starting at 11am.
Just make sure you prep the visit well and book it with at least one day prior – you can make it by phone: (+34) 93 890 30 66 or by mail visitespriorat@pinord.com.
I am very excited about a potential visit to this winery and trying a hopefully amazing organic Priorat wine myself!
