Petalos 2012 is coming from Bierzo, which in my opinion is, as they say, a major up and coming region. Yet to be honest I believe the ascension has already happened and you may recognise these bright, fresh, but spicy Spanish wines.
This Bierzo wine is gorgeous – you see that colourful yet stylish label and already think about a feast and loads of delicious food and wine. It is elegantly spicy and also fruity, comes with some gentle and ripe strawberries and firm and defined bramble (not stewed!). The alcohol content is on the higher side with 14%.
So even though Bierzo is not yet known as Rioja, yet the style of it is quite unique for that region and this wine represents it brilliantly.
Could it be compared to some Syrah wines in northern Rhone, but maybe being rounder and bramblier?
When tasting second glass I can really taste herbs, forest fruit and even a bit of mushroom – a truly awesome work of a winemaker. Try it yourself!
