Roche Audran 2013 is made from organic grapes in Cotes du Rhone. I have sourced it at Borough Wines, their small stall is located at Borough market, where you can check their new bottles and buy something you like. The service is good, I felt the guy was really interested in why I wanted to buy an organic (or natural if there were any) wine, so had given me a few choices.
Smell is quite unrefined and there are some carbonic off flavours together with some fruit. It can be a bit of a fault in a winemaking process, but most probably just a very young wine that is still a bit ‘playing’.
Flavours are similar – fruit opening up more, but woody notes are very pronounced. There is nothing unpleasant in this organic red from France, but it is so dry, it doesn’t have any sweet notes – so you taste the fruit as more earthy and restrained.
It’s more cloudy and indeed somewhat playful, as you can describe young unstable wines, yet it has its charm. This organic red wine is definitely different from usual Cotes du Rhone suspects. It is interesting to try, but a bit too off for me in terms of that carbonic smell.
