Buy organic wine: Vintage Roots - I Blame The Wine

Buy organic wine: Vintage Roots

VintageRoots logoJust off A33, in the middle of it between Reading and Basingstoke, there is a rather unique wine merchant – Vintage Roots.

The uniqueness comes from their total organic specialisation – they are calling themselves as The Organic Wine People. If you have a quick search at the exclusive All Organic Wines tool, you will also find out that they stock more organic wines than any other big wine merchant, and that is more than Waitrose and Majestic Wine altogether!

Vintage Roots is also very well represented in the top list – check out their top organic wines here in The Best Organic Wines list.

I must add that if you are not only searching for organic or biodynamic wines, but also no-sulphites-added ones, then you are in luck here too – they have an easy filter so you can find these with ease. If you are after a case of no SO2 wines – their new special offer of £59 may be quite interesting as well. 6 bottles are quite different – I will say that two made by Albet i Noya are very nice, but the Toscar organic red was quite disappointing, so maybe worth just constructing your own case.

Let’s have a look at their best organic wines then.

Barranc Dels Comellars Priorat 2012

Barranc Dels Comellars from Priorat is one of the glorious organic wines from this renowned region in Catalunya, Spain that they stock.

Generous black fruit got this wine an amazing rating of 28/35 and if you like the style of a blackberry explosion, maturity and earthy notes then I would highly recommend you put this bottle in your basket when you shop at Vintage Roots. Shopping for organic wine could not be easier – you get great range of organic wines and a convenience of getting a case of them delivered to your door. It is not free, you would need to pay £6.95 for the delivery, unless of course you are ordering 60+ bottles or the order is £125+, then it would be free indeed.

Organic Tempranillo Albet I Noya 2011 Ull de LlebreAnother good example of what you can get at Vintage Roots without a strain to your budget is organic Tempranillo from the pioneers of organic viticulture in Penedes – Albet i Noya.

This bottle of Ull de Llebre of 2011 vintage has been recently reviewed here, and achieved a rating of 27/35 for an amazing work with Tempranillo.

My personal shopping experience with Vintage Roots was great; my friends know that I am a complaining type when it comes to a poor service, so this compliment pretty much says it all – they deliver a great service. What I liked the most is their willingness to listen (when I emailed them that the delivery failed and I wanted it to be re-scheduled) and actually help without making a scene (yes I know, I am demanding, but it is nice to get my request sorted .. and with a smile!)

Ijalba Graciano organicFinally, this is a new bottle, one of several from my recent case – Ijalba 2012 Organic Graciano, Rioja.  The wine explodes with generous cherry and violets, touches of plums and strawberries. It is  tannic and not overly round, having said that it is not sharp, but quite straightforward (if it makes sense?). As for me it is a very interesting single varietal wine from Rioja. Graciano is a robust, but elegant and somewhat mineral grape, so enjoy it fully have it slightly chilled.

I have met the representatives of this company at the recent London Wine Fair – they have told me a great story about their vineyards and showed me pictures of their facilities; yet what is fascinating is that their commitment to organic viticulture and passion to create unique and tasty wines, which are just a bit different than your typical Rioja (nothing’s wrong with good Riojas, but we all want some diversity, don’t we?)

I do not know about you, but good stories make me want to try these wines even more, to taste how the winemaker’s story resulted in the wine. Even though the rating is a bit lower than the previous two – 26/35 – I strongly recommend this wine with your Spanish meaty starters.

There would be ‘new wines to blame’ reviewed, which I sourced from Vintage Roots, so watch this space and buy organic wine with confidence!
